Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G Is Virtually Gone

Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G Is Virtually Gone

The new HTC EVO 4G from Sprint, the much anticipated competitor of the Apple iPhone 4 has hit store shelves and disappeared almost as fast. Sprint’s website is reporting the device is ‘so hot we can’t keep it on our virtual shelves” and tells consumers more ‘are on the way’. The carrier is hoping its new smartphone will bring in plenty of new customers to the carrier based on the new, speedy WiMAX network.

Customers are also finding it hard to grab a phone at most Sprint retail locations. Some stores are holding back on a few phones to bring in new customers looking to switch carriers. The company reports it is not taking pre-orders for the HTC EVO 4G at this time either. No one has said when more phones will be available.

So far the HTC EVO 4G has sold well. The company estimates they sold 150,000 units on its launch day. It is the first smartphone with WiMAX to be available in the US. The phone features a 4.3 inch touch screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera, video conferencing, WiFi and 8 GB of removable storage.

The HTC EVO 4G is available exclusively from Sprint and is currently selling for $200 with a two-year contact. The phone carrier is hopeful the new 4G smartphone will give it a leg up on regaining customers. They also hope to take a lead with 4G services. Sprint’s biggest rival Verizon Wireless has plans to launch a 4G service but not until later this year.

Earlier it was reported by Sprint that the HTC EVO 4G phone had outsold the company’s Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct combine by three times in just one day. However, the company admits its mistake in the comparison, changing their estimates from 300,000 units sold to half that number.
